After listening to speaker, David Brin, this morning on the topic of Leadership I was reminded again about the #1 skill to Powerful Speaking.
That skill?
Being YOU
You may ask, “Why is that a skill? ” Being you is the thing you should be really good at, right?
What I’ve noticed is that people are willing to be themselves as long as they are not in front of a room full of people.
Therefore, being YOU in front of a room full of people is a skill that you can work on getting better at. It is like building a muscle. That repeated action of increased weight eventually creates a more toned and stronger bicep. In the leadership talk I was at today they mentioned that it takes the brain 500 times to make it proficient at the skill . That is an interesting statistic.
So how do you build the skill of being YOU in front of a group of people.
Here are some keys to building this skill:
1- Know who you are
2- Be willing to be that no matter what
3- Be willing to be aware of and release any judgments or points of view about who you “should be” in someone else’s eyes
4 -Be willing to be seen and heard while being vulnerable
5-Tune into the inhibition and ask yourself, “How old am I being?”
6- What is the conversation from the heart that I truly want to share
These 6 points are not bullet points or part of a check list. They are keys to a practice that is required to build the skill of Being You in front of an audience. Remember, to build skill requires repetition and sometimes a coach to assist you. So don’t be hard on yourself if you don’t “get it” right way. Anatomically your not meant to. Start today where you are and be curious with yourself. Ask yourself, “What is keeping you from being YOU in front of an audience?” Be willing to actively listen to what comes up for you.
The #1 skill to powerful speaking….YOU!
All the Best
