Have you ever wondered what your purpose is?
Have you ever felt a longing for a meaning?
What is Dharma
In Hinduism, they have a word for this. The word dharma means, your unique purpose in life. It is the process by which you use your unique skills and passions to serve your community and the world. Have you noticed that when you are not doing your unique skills and passions to be of service, you feel a bit off, even depressed?
Recently I have been assisting my husband on a video shoot in the Carribean. We are following a musician and creating a documentary of what inspires him and how he uses music for his dharma and consciousness. It has been a wonderful week but I have put my business, music, and my own dharma on hold. While it is super fun assisting my husband and I feel like I am good at the job I am doing, I can’t help but feel a bit lost, sad, and a slight bit depressed by the end of the week.
The Vibration of Your Purpose
Your purpose is that unique thing that you are good at and serve with. You may be good at a lot of things, but you will know what your dharma is by the vibrational feeling you have when you are doing it OR not doing it. The vibration of your dharma is lightness, it feels on point and inspired when you are doing it. Time will feel elusive and there is nothing else you would rather be doing. Do you have something that feels that way?
The vibrations of loss, confusion, sadness, and depression are sure indicators that whatever you are doing is not exactly the purpose and meaning that you are here to serve with. How many times have you heard about a midlife person leaving their job, home, and/or family because something just didn’t “feel” right? Perhaps they explained it as if they were drowning, anxious, or depressed. While it may seem reactive and sudden, people are responding to a vibrational frequency that they just cannot bear anymore, and if they stay in those frequencies too much longer it is common to get sick. So they attempt to change the outer environment.
Access Your Life Vibrationally
What really needs to happen is a vibrational life assessment. Take a long deep look at what enlivens you, what gives you that sense of timelessness and lightness, and follow the breadcrumbs from there. This deep look may give you your exact dharma or it may lead you to a space of inner peace to do some deeper inquiry. When you are living your dharma, inner peace is there, even if the material asks in your life haven’t lined up the way your ego wanted them to. It may mean a new community of friends, it may mean going back to school, it may mean moving to a different part of the world you never thought of, it may even mean going back to something you left early in your life.
Find the Right State of Mind
A good way to get into the space of deeper awareness around your dharma is to quiet the thinking mind (beta brain waves) and come into your subconscious and creative awareness (theta brain waves). I like doing this with sound baths. Sound therapy through sound baths has a way of slowing down your brain waves so you stop your pro and con list and get into your deeper knowing of what you are here to do and how you are to serve the planet. Coming into a slower state of mind allows you to tap into that soul calling you may be feeling. While meditation can do this as well, sometimes it takes years of meditation to get to a slowed brain wave state. Sound Can offer this state of mind more swiftly, especially if you are a beginner at meditating.
Alter Your Mind, Shift Your Vibration
When you are living your dharma, you spend more time in slower brain waves. This is what gives you that sense of lightness and timelessness. Beta brain waves happen when you are in that day-to-day thinking and doing. Dharma living tends to happen in more of a flow state. You will feel the slowing down of your mind as well as the shift of your vibration when you are in your dharma. If you are a writer for example the writing will flow without having to agonize over the next paragraph. If you do agonize over a paragraph, practice pausing, altering your mind, and vibration to the flow state again. Here is a playlist that may support you with that. It can be very helpful to get a sound bath done personally for you as well.
